“Uncompressed Transparent Capturing; what does it mean for Post-Production?”

May 22, 2002 @ 1:30pm Palais V

With their brand new Viper FilmStream Camera, Thomson Multimedia introduces a new digital concept into the film world. The camera, being able to supply an RGB 4:4:4 signal, offers an unrivalled performance in picture quality, especially in resolution and color-depth. At the same time, Thomson Multimedia together with director’s friend (subsidiary of DVS), provide a unique way of shooting electronically, called “FilmStream”. Working in FilmStream is much closer to the ‘film’-workflow (celluloid) than with other electronic cameras.

"Feature Production: Cinecittà Digital 2000" May 23, 2002 @ 1:30pm Palais B

Cinecittà, the Rome-based film company associated with world-renowned film director, Frederico Fellini, and with film-music composer Enio Moricone, called on Thomson Multimedia when it decided to orient itself toward electronic film making at the end of 2000. To launch the new digital era at Cinecittà, the company held a competition to find the most promising up-and-coming young filmmakers, eventually choosing six candidate groups who were keen to make a short film. Thomson Multimedia (formerly Philips) was approached to sponsor the groups with the world’s lightest high-definition camera, the LDK 7000, which was a prototype still under development at the time. During the course of 2001, the six filmmakers shot their films using both the Thomson LDK 7000 high-definition camera systems and the VooDoo high-definition tape recorder, which easily copes with the high data rates and large data volumes associated with storing uncompressed high-resolution motion-picture images. During the many months of shooting, the local Thomson organization provided technical support.

Finally, in October 2001, the filming was completed and electronic post-production began. This time Cinecittà sought the services of Apple Computers, who offered their newest high-definition version of ‘Final Cut Pro’ for editing the Thomson VooDoo images. Kodak also assisted by transferring all 6 short stories to on 35mm celluloid film.
